EXW vs FOB for Office Chair Imports
A practical comparison of EXW and FOB quotations for office-chair buyers, including responsibility, local charges, documents and comparison risks.
EXW and FOB prices cannot be compared directly. The useful question is which costs, actions and risks are included up to the named point, and whether the quotation uses the same shipment assumptions.
1. What an EXW quote means
Under an EXW arrangement, the buyer generally takes responsibility from the seller's premises. Collection, export handling and local logistics need to be arranged and priced separately.
- Named factory or pickup location
- Loading responsibility
- Export-declaration arrangement
- Domestic transport and local charges
2. What an FOB quote means
For FOB, the seller normally handles agreed costs and export steps until the goods are loaded at the named port. The exact port and included local charges still need confirmation.
- Named port of loading
- Export customs and documents
- Origin handling included in the quote
- Handover point to the buyer's carrier
3. How to compare correctly
Put both quotations on the same basis before deciding. Ask the freight forwarder to price the missing origin services for an EXW quote.
- Same model and packing
- Same quantity and shipment date
- All origin charges listed
- Ocean freight and destination costs separated
4. Questions before approval
Confirm the named place or port, payment terms, document responsibility and any charges that can change after booking.
- Who books pickup and loading
- Who provides export documents
- Which local charges are included
- How delays or storage are handled
Buyer questions
Is FOB always better than EXW?
No. The better term depends on the buyer's logistics network, shipment size and ability to manage origin services.
Why might a factory quote only EXW?
The order may be below its normal export volume, or the factory may prefer not to manage port and export services for that transaction.
Does FOB include ocean freight?
No. FOB normally ends when goods are loaded at the named port; ocean freight is arranged beyond that point.
